In partnership with Monument of Faith Church (founded in 1933), its Social Justice and Outreach Team, and Russell Memorial CME Church (founded in 1903), we are launching the 1K Academy Afterschool Program in fall 2026.

The program will serve children and youth in the Grant Street Community and the surrounding Hayti and Southside neighborhoods, including students attending Burton Magnet Elementary School, C.C. Spaulding Elementary School, and other nearby schools. Beginning October 13, students will gather every Tuesday and Thursday from 2–6 p.m. at Russell Memorial CME Church.

Through tutoring and academic support, culturally responsive enrichment, gardening, arts and crafts, sports, recreation, field trips, and relationships with caring adults, the program will provide a welcoming environment where young people can learn, grow, lead, and thrive. Transportation will also be provided for participating students.

Although the program is beginning this fall, we still need financial support to sustain and strengthen it. Donations will help cover:

• Program materials and educational supplies

• Healthy snacks and meals

• Transportation

• Arts, gardening, sports, and enrichment activities

• Field trips and educational experiences

• Stipends for teachers, mentors, and program leaders

• Scholarships to ensure every student can participate fully

This program is being shaped alongside neighbors, educators, families, and church leaders who have long served as anchors of care and guidance in Hayti. More than an after-school program, it is an investment in the future of the neighborhood—surrounding young people with a community that knows them, believes in them, and is committed to who they are becoming.
