Grant Street Park (North)

Revamping the Neighborhood Park

To support the well-being of neighbors in the Grant Street Community, we are working together to revitalize the neighborhood park in the historic Hayti District of Durham. This effort is led by local residents and neighbors, in partnership with Durham Parks & Recreation, local businesses, and community partners, who share a commitment to caring for this important community space.

The park that exists today was originally organized and stewarded through the leadership of Miss Lucas of First Chronicles Day Care, the Grant Street Ladies, and Monument of Faith Church. After decades of neglect, their vision and dedication helped create a place where neighborhood children, families, and elders could gather and enjoy time together.

Today, we are grateful to build on that legacy as we enter the next phase of development for the park. Through community conversations and collaborative planning, neighbors are working together to reimagine the space with improvements that support safety, accessibility, play, and opportunities for connection.

More than a physical renovation, this work is about stewarding a shared space that has long served as a gathering point for the neighborhood. By building on the foundation laid by those who came before us, we hope to help the park continue to serve the community for generations to come.
