Grant Street Community Shares Vision for the Neighborhood with City Leaders

Meeting with City Council Member, Matt Kopac. - May 24, 2026

On Sunday, May 24th, leaders and elders from the Grant Street Community had the opportunity to meet with Durham City Council member Matt Kopac following an earlier meeting on May 6th with Durham County Commissioner Wendy Jacobs. After hearing more about the neighborhood’s ongoing work and vision, Matt reached out to continue the conversation and learn more about what residents have been building together.

During the meeting, neighborhood leaders specifically asked for support in three key areas:

  1. Helping connect the community to the appropriate city departments regarding future community use of land surrounding the neighborhood.

  2. Assisting with communication and clarity surrounding the Parks & Recreation situation connected to Grant Street Park North

  3. Continuing to help connect resident-led neighborhood projects to city resources, partnerships, and opportunities that can benefit long-time residents and families

The conversation also included updates on several neighborhood-led projects already underway, including the community garden at Monument of Faith Church, neighborhood volunteer initiatives, and broader hopes for how land and shared spaces within the neighborhood can continue serving the people who live here for generations to come.

We were especially encouraged by Matt’s willingness to help support clearer communication and advocacy surrounding the Parks & Recreation process connected to Grant Street Park North. During the meeting, neighborhood leaders shared the extensive work residents have already done to gather ideas, feedback, and vision for what neighbors hope the park can become for children, elders, families, and future generations.

At the heart of these conversations is a shared belief that development should include the voices, history, and leadership of the people already rooted in the community. We remain committed to resident-led collaboration, preserving the stories and relationships that make this neighborhood special, and creating spaces marked by beauty, dignity, care, and belonging.

We’re grateful for leaders who are willing to sit with neighbors, listen directly to community concerns and hopes, and support efforts being shaped from the ground up by the people who call Grant Street home.

More updates to come soon. 🌱🏡✨
