Why 1K Academy? Because we want our young people to aim beyond 100. 📚🌱🏀🎨
The name honors William, the late twin brother of program founder Frank Smith, whose nickname was “1K.” It also carries a message for every student: We often encourage children to score 100 on a test, but we don’t want them to imagine 100 as the limit of what they can achieve. We want them to dream big, aim for 1,000, and know the sky is the limit.
Beginning Tuesday, October 13, the FREE 1K Academy Afterschool Program will welcome elementary school students every Tuesday and Thursday from 2–6 PM at Russell Memorial CME Church.
Students will find more than homework help. They’ll have tutoring and academic support, culturally responsive enrichment, gardening, arts and crafts, sports, recreation, and caring adults invested in who they are becoming.
We’re reaching out to families at Burton Elementary, C.C. Spaulding Elementary, and other schools near Hayti as we build a program rooted in the neighborhood. 🚌 Transportation will be provided for participating students.
This is what partnership can look like: Russell Memorial CME Church’s 1K Academy, Grant Street Community, and Monument of Faith Church’s Social Justice and Outreach Team coming together to invest in the next generation.
