Building Partnerships for Housing Solutions
Sarah Viñas, Director of Housing & Neighborhood Services for the City of Durham
One of the things we've been working on behind the scenes is building relationships with people across Durham who care deeply about housing, neighborhood stability, and community well-being.
On Tuesday, June 30th, we had the opportunity to meet with Sarah Viñas, Director of Housing & Neighborhood Services for the City of Durham, to share more about the work happening in the Grant Street Community and the long-term vision our neighbors have been shaping together. Sarah brings more than two decades of experience in affordable housing and community development, and we appreciated the chance to introduce our neighborhood and begin building a relationship.
Part of that conversation centered on a growing reality many of us see every day: there are currently five to six encampments where our unhoused neighbors are living within and around our community. Rather than simply acknowledging the need, we're exploring what it would take to create real, long-term solutions.
We're beginning conversations with several partners who each bring an important piece of the puzzle. Through our relationship with the nonprofit, Settled, we're learning from communities that have successfully created neighborhoods of tiny homes designed to foster dignity, belonging, and long-term stability. We're also connected with an out of state church that has expressed interest in helping fund housing efforts, and we know a local developer with experience building quality tiny homes. At this point, one of the biggest missing pieces is identifying appropriate land where a project like this could one day become a reality.
Nothing is finalized, but this is a good example of the work happening behind the scenes. Many of our meetings don't result in immediate announcements—they're about connecting the right people, listening, learning, and laying the groundwork for opportunities that could make a lasting difference in our neighborhood. We'll continue keeping the community updated as these conversations develop.
