Community Garden Update
Jimaune Williams and Sasha Tillett in front of what will be the community garden.
On Monday, June 29, we completed the required orientation for our $10,000 Community Garden Grant through the City of Durham. Out of more than 250 applications, only 13 community projects were selected for funding, and we're incredibly grateful that our neighborhood was chosen.
This garden is about much more than growing vegetables. We're creating a shared space where neighbors can gather, children can learn and play, elders can pass down stories and wisdom, and our community can continue growing stronger together. We hope it becomes a place that nourishes both people and relationships for years to come.
With orientation now complete, we're awaiting the release of grant funds so construction can officially begin. Behind the scenes, we've continued planning the garden layout, organizing volunteers, and preparing for the next phase of the project.
We're also grateful to have Sasha and Jimaune, a newly engaged couple from Monument of Faith Church, helping lead this effort. After participating in our Social Justice & Outreach team book study of Let Justice Roll Down by John Perkins, they've continued investing their time and energy into the neighborhood, and we're thankful for their leadership and commitment to this project.
We're looking forward to breaking ground soon and can't wait to invite everyone out to help build this space together. Stay tuned for volunteer days and construction updates in the coming weeks!
